Acer
palmatum 'Butterfly'
Variegated
Developed by Koichiro Wada Nursery, Japan before
1938 'Butterfly' has striking variegation. Frequent prunning is recomended to thin inner branching as it gets older, in order to
prevent it from becoming to congested. Fall color
is orange. There does appear to be two different cultivars being sold under the
name 'Butterfly', while they are similar there is enough difference to indicate
that they are distinctively different cultivars. One has pink and yellow variegation in
early spring while the other one is pink and creamy white. Later in the season the
variegation in both appear white. Butterfly does better in partial shade and in warmer climates the pink fades as summer
temperatures rise.
