Acer palmatum 'Goshiki shidare' is a very unusual, hard to find variegated lace leaf maple. The deeply dissected leaves emerge green cream and pink and remain brushed with white variegation all summer long. The growth habit is very pendulous and fall color is usually orange. Unfortunately much like 'Toyama nishiki' it tends to revert to solid green, maybe more so in hotter climates. Great care must be taken first by the propagator to make sure only the most colorful branches are grafted and then by the gardener to make sure any branches with solid green leaves are removed.

Introduced by Billy Schwartz of Green Mansions Nursery, 'Baby Lace' was the first witches broom discovered on a dissectum. The leaves are small, intricate and just about as finely dissected as 'Red Filigree Lace' only much more irregular. In spring the color is astounding, with pink, red and green all mixed together but as the new growth hardens off the color quickly becomes a solid light green. Fall color is a nice mix of yellows, oranges and reds. ‘Gossamer’ is reportedly a cross between Acer japonicum and Acer palmatum dissectum. This cultivar should probably be listed as Acer japonicum x palmatum 'Gossamer' if this is the case. I have not seen it listed that way. No matter what you call it this is one cool little tree and deserves more attention. Very slow growing when young eventually reaching 10 feet or more with age. The deeply divided foliage almost appears linearilobum like.
