Acer palmatum ‘Ikandi’ is an extremely variegated Japanese maple discovered as a chance seedling from Acer palmatum ‘Alpenweiss’ by Talon Buchholz. The leaves on ‘Ikandi emerge almost entirely pink before the green and white develop around the veins. The pink variegation fades to green and creamy white by summer time and eventually will turn orange to red in the fall. ‘Ikandi’ needs to be protected from the hot afternoon sun, but morning or dappled sun help to provide excellent color to the variegated leaves in the spring. Variegated leaves on ‘Ikandi’ develop more as it matures, so be patient with this one and you will reap the beautiful benefits in the long run. ‘Ikandi’ will grow into a small to medium sized tree that should only reach eight to ten feet tall at maturity. 10 Year Size: Height: 8-10 feet Width: 4-6 feet
Acer palmatum 'Beni shien' Variegated Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Beni Shien’ is possibly the most unique maple introduced in the last fifty years. Harold Johnson of Tallassee, Alabama introduced this wonderful variegated Japanese maple born of the south and then gave it a Japanese name that translates to red smoke. The deeply divided leaves emerge more purple than anything else, but will have cream markings starting at the base of the leaf and extending along the margins of most of the lobes. In summer the purple of spring will change to olive green in more shade or bronze in more sun. In late summer new red growth will pop out all over the plant. Fall color is usually orange or red. Acer palmatum 'Kurenai jishi' Red Lion's head Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Kurenai Jishi’ is often referred to as the red lion’s head maple. ‘Kurenai jishi’ leafs out bright red in the spring with some of the most unique foliage you will ever see on a Japanese maple. The leaves are curled up, crinkled, and close to the branch similar to ‘Shishigashira’. The foliage on ‘Kurenai jishi’ turns from bright red to burgundy to green from spring to summer. The leaves then turn orange-red in fall. ‘Kurenai jishi’ is a dwarf Japanese maple that will only reach about 4 feet tall at maturity.

Acer palmatum ‘Ariadne’ is a lovely reticulated Japanese maple. ‘Ariadne’ emerges in spring with light pink and peach colored leaves with dark green veins. This reticulated variegation begins to fade in the summer becoming a pale burgundy through the hotter months. Acer palmatum 'Ghost Dancer' emerges almost solid white with red tips in early spring then the green veins develop spreading through the leaf giving it color. By summer it is almost totally green. Fall color is a nice mix of yellow and red. While the name and the reticulated foliage both link this to the others in the ghost series, this is not a Buchholz introduction.

Acer palmatum 'Arakawa' translates to rough bark and that perfectly describes the most outstanding feature of this interesting cultivar. It takes 3-5 years for the bark to begin to develop its texture, but once it begins to develop it soon becomes an amazing site. The bark on older plants looks alot like that of a pine tree. The leaves of the new growth emerge with a yellow tint turning green as summer arrives before turning beautiful tones of red, orange or yellow in fall. Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' Green Japanese Maple (Pre-Order)

Its claim to fame is that Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' is considered the only upright dissectum. This is technically correct but the dissected leaf is the only similarity between 'Seiryu' and other dissectums. Actually the leaves are so much smaller, that even the leaves do not have the appearance of other dissectums. That being said, here at Maple Ridge Nurseries we love the plant we affectionately call the "weed" because it is so easy to grow. Seiryu is a fast growing small tree that is mostly vase shaped when young growing wider and much rounder with age. The foliage appears green in spring with a slight red or pink tinge to the margins of each leaf. These margins quickly fade away leaving a very attractive medium green leaf for summer. Sometimes in late summer the colorful margins reappear, but this time a little more orange. Most literature describes the fall color as gold or yellow but I have never seen this except in photos from other parts of the world. In our climate the first cold air may give the tree an orange or red appearance but the leaves will always end up burgundy before dropping.

Acer palmatum 'Summer Gold' Yellow Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Summer Gold’ has arguably the best yellow spring color of any Japanese maple. ‘Summer Gold’ leafs out yellow in the spring and only gets more golden throughout the spring and summer. Fall color is orange to red. ‘Summer Gold’ is very heat tolerant and can even handle full sun in most climates. ‘Summer Gold’ will not get very large, as it will develop into a short, bushy tree.

Deeply divided leaves appear light green in spring. Foliage turns slightly darker for summer. In fall the real show starts with orange, red and even yellow making an appearance. White striations appear on the bark and become quite prominent when older. 'Fascination' is fast growing, forming a large round topped tree with age. Young branches appear to be slightly pendulous on the ends giving the overall tree a mounding effect.

Acer palmatum 'Nuresagi' Red Japanese Maple

'Nuresagi' also known as, the 'Wet Heron' maple is very fast growing especially when young. Younger plants tend to put on vertical growth faster than most varieties we grow, sometimes running out 3-4 feet upright leaders in one season. Of course it does not grow at this rate every year. The long leaders will spend some time filling out before sending out more vertical growth. Very nice white striations also appear on the bark of older wood. The name 'Wet Heron' comes from the blue cast created by silver pubescence covering the deep red leaves when they emerge in spring. This reminded the Japanese of the 19th century, of a wet heron. 'Nuresagi' was listed in nursery catalogs as early as 1882.

Acer palmatum 'Moonfire' Red Japanese Maple

'Moonfire' is one of our favorites. It seems to grow faster and hold it's color better in shade than other red leaf cultivars. 'Moonfire' also tolerates full sun and maintains it's color into the hot Georgia summer as well as any upright variety we grow. The foliage of 'Moonfire' comes out dark purple in spring but tends to turn more red as summer nears, except in more shady locations where the color remains more purple. It's leaves are slightly translucent and tend to glow when the sun lights them from behind. Fall color is bright fiery red. 'Moonfire' was discovered by Dick Wolff in 1974.

Another of the ghost series from Talon Buchholz, this is a fine example of a reticulated leaf form. 'Amber Ghost' requires afternoon shade in most climates and mostly shade in hotter areas. The spring color is predominately white with dark veins in shade but with a moderate amount of sun the entire leaf becomes washed with an amber hue.Fall color is orange with red and yellow.

Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’ is one of the first trees to announce that spring is here and does so with eye popping color. The yellow, orange and red of early spring turns first more yellow then to a subtle green for summer. In hotter climates this cultivar should be sited in partial shade, In cooler climates the orange lasts much longer into the summer. Fall color is bright orange or sometimes red. This cultivar was first selected at Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery in Italy in the late 1980s.

Acer palmatum ‘Cosmos’ is one of the most heavily variegated Japanese maples in existence. ‘Cosmos’ has green leaves with splashes of pink and white all over them. This variegation is typically very consistent and persists even in the summer. Fall color is a vibrant orange.
